German site iFun (Google Translate) reports that Apple has launched an exchange program in 36 countries for certain models of its European 5W USB power adapter. The company says the adapter may overheat, and pose a safety risk in some instances.
The possibly faulty adapter, identified as Model A1300, originally came with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S models that shipped from October 2009 to September 2012. Apple is telling users to bring the affected adapters into an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, and they’ll be given a new adapter after a corresponding iPhone serial number is verified.
Apple launched a similar program last year that allowed users to trade-in a third-party USB charger for a discount on an official Apple charger, after the electrocution death of a Chinese woman that was likely caused by a counterfeit iPhone charger.
