Virgin Atlantic is reportedly preparing to integrate Apple’s iBeacon technology into London’s Heathrow Airport. The airline will be using beacons to alert customers of promotional deals and areas of interest.
In one use case, passengers would receive an offer on their phone for no-fee currency exchange as they near that place of business.
The program will utilize Apple’s iBeacon technology along with the Passbook iOS app.
Apple’s iBeacons communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth LE with iOS devices to deliver information to the device when a user is nearby the beacon.
Apple uses iBeacon in their retails stores, and the transmitters are also being put to use by Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association in their stadiums and arenas in order to enhance fan’s experiences.
