Apple Debuts New Animated iPhone 5c Ads on Yahoo, New York Times Websites

Apple debuted new animated ads advertising its second-tier iPhone 5c handset on Thursday. The ads, appearing on Yahoo and The New York Times are part of a bid by Apple to bring more attention to it’s “budget” iPhone.

AppleInsider notes the interactive ads can be seen on the landing pages for Yahoo and NYTimes.com. The ads feature the colorful 35-dot grid created when an Apple-made silicone case is snapped onto the back of an iPhone 5c.

The ads, set to popular music tracks, randomly display short videos. One example is an ad showing a cloud of red balloons that morph into the iPhone 5c case grid, all set to a soundtrack of Nena’s “99 Luftballons.”

Apple generally uses their ad dollars on print and TV advertisements, so the new online ads are a notable departure.

The iPhone 5c is considered by some to be a “struggling” product, as sales haven’t performed up to the usual blowout standards of Apple’s previous iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted in January that the demand for the iPhone 5c was “different than we thought.”
