As expected, Apple today introduced the new Retina display iPad mini, with a beginning price of $399. The original iPad mini will continue to be available for sale with an entry-level price of $299.
The new iPad mini will sport a 7.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is the same resolution of the latest full-sized iPads, and the processor will be the same 64-bit A7 chip that is found in the iPad Air and iPhone 5s. The M7 motion coprocessor will also be along for the ride. And it WILL be able to tell if it’s riding…
The new device sports two antennas, using MIMO technology, so the iPad mini delivers twice the Wi-Fi performance of its predecessor. And the Wi-Fi + Cellular model supports more LTE bands than previously.
The new iPad mini will be available in silver/white style, or a space gray and black combo.
Apple also snuck a storage bump in for the Retina iPad mini, with a new 128GB storage option. That will run you $699 for the Wi-Fi only mini, or $829 if you want the cellular capabilities too.
Apple is also introducing a new line of colorful Smart Covers, starting at $39 each, all the way up to wraparound case that will run you $79.
The original iPad mini gets to hang around for another year. It will sell in a 16GB model, with either Wi-Fi only at $299, or a Wi-Fi + Cellular model for $429.
