Beats to Launch Long-Awaited Music Streaming Service Within a Few Months in U.S.

Beats has announced that it will debut its long-awaited music streaming service, Beats Music, in the United States “within the next few months.”

Luke Wood, president and COO of the company, told TNW that it will be accessible on the Web, as well as from an iOS or Android device. Support for Windows 8, presumably through a dedicated app, will arrive at a later date.

Beats acquired music streaming service MOG for $14 million in July of last year. The company purchased the service to accelerate the development of the Beats service that was already in progress.

Wood revealed the service would focus on playlists, saying: “We’re going to focus really heavily on playlists, because that’s how we consume music and that’s how most people consume music.”

The music streaming marketplace is already more crowded than a dance floor on a Saturday night, with established faces such as Spotify and Rdio battling it out with Apple’s recently launched iTunes Radio, in addition to offerings from Microsoft and Google.

Wood said Beats Music will be centered around “a very specific idea,” in order to differentiate itself from competing services, focusing on curation, rather than forcing users to search for tracks or artists they might enjoy.

Interested music lovers can signup at the Beats Music website to receive more information about the new service as it becomes available.
