Leaker Claims Apple’s Rumored Foldable iPhone’s Under-Screen Camera Likely Won’t Offer Face ID

Leaker Claims Apple’s Rumored Foldable iPhone’s Under-Screen Camera Likely Won’t Offer Face ID

While Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone will feature an under-screen camera, the camera module is unlikely to include TrueDepth components that allow for Face ID, according to Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station.

The leaker says his sources within the Chinese supply chain say the foldable iPhone (which I like to call the “iPhone Origami”) will have an inner display that uses “under-screen camera technology.” The leaker on Monday said the foldable iPhone will boast a 7.76-inch inner display and the 5.49-inch outer display.

The leak suggests the display will have a single punch-hole camera. The new rumor jibes with a previous claim by Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple’s foldable iPhone will use a Touch ID side button instead of Face ID. Apple already integrates Touch ID into the side button on some iPads.

The rumor makes some sense, as getting Face ID under the screen would be tough to get to work correctly, as Apple’s TrueDepth camera system requires a clear and unobstructed view of your face to properly scan it. Display layers at the present block or distort infrared light, which makes it difficult for the system to create a 3D facial map.

Apple is expected to launch its long-rumored foldable iPhone late next year with a premium price tag attached to be sure.
