China Airlines Adopts AirTag Location Sharing for Tracking Lost Luggage

Taiwan’s China Airlines has joined the growing list of airlines supporting Apple’s iPhone feature that allows passengers to share the location of their AirTag-equipped baggage with an airline, according to Liberty Times Media.

The share item location feature became available with the release of iOS 18.2, which was released in December.

Customers can privately and securely share the item’s location. Access to each link is limited to a small number of people, and recipients are required to authenticate in order to view the link through either their Apple Account or partner email address. The item’s location stops being shared as soon as a user is reunited with their item, or at any time that the item’s owner decides. An item’s shared location automatically expires after seven days. The whole process is end-to-end encrypted.

The feature requires an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, respectively. Users can generate a Share Item Location link in the Find My app on their device and share it with the airline. Recipients of the link will be able to view the location of the item on an interactive map. The website automatically updates when an item has moved, along with a timestamp of the most recent update.

As soon as a customer’s item is found, location sharing is disabled. The owner can also stop sharing their location at any time, and the sharing link automatically expires after 7 days to ensure the privacy of passengers.

Other airlines offering the feature to their passengers include:

  • United Airlines
  • Delta
  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Lufthansa
  • Air Canada
  • Air New Zealand
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Aer Lingus
  • Austrian Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Swiss International Airlines
  • Eurowings
  • Iberia Airlines

Additional airlines are expected to implement the feature over the coming months.
