The FBI’s Philadelphia Field Office has issued a warning about some new tactics being used by scammers. The goal, steal your personal information and steal your money!
This scam involves scammers using email and actual phone calls rather than text messages. The crooks will often spoof caller ID information, making it appear as if the call is originating from a legitimate FBI phone number. The scam also involves using emails, and letterheads with the FBI seal, and even a photo of the current FBI director to trick victims. The usual fraudulent email clues are present, including incorrect grammar and missing or misspelled words.
The FBI reminds potential victims that law enforcement does not call or email individuals threatening arrest or demanding money. Nor will they ask you to wire money to them to avoid jail or ask you to give them money to help catch a felon. The FBI will also not ask you for your Social Security number.
The FBI says to cease all contact with the scammers immediately, then notify your banks and credit card companies to secure your accounts. File a police report with local law enforcement. Finally, file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov).
