Apple TV+ has cancelled its popular comedy series Mythic Quest after a four season run. The streaming service has been kind enough to shoot new scenes for the already released fourth season finale to provide fans of the series with some closure.
The series – which starred Rob McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, and David Hornsby – followed the employees of fiction game studio Mythic Quest Studios who designed, created, and supported the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game the studio was named for.
A fifth season had been expected to be filmed, so the cancellation caught fans unawares. However, a new ending for the fourth season ender has been filmed, tying up loose ends that were left dangling for the season ending cliffhangers. The re-edited final episode with a new ending will be available this week.
Series producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby and Rob McElhenney told Deadline that they wanted to be able to say a proper goodbye to fans:
Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build — and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode — so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.
Mythic Quest, which debuted in February 2020, was one of the first shows that launched on Apple TV+. While the series has proven to be popular with its viewers, apparently not enough folks were watching to save the series.
Apple’s decision to cancel Mythic Quest comes as Apple TV+ is looking to cut its recently reported losses of as much as $1 billion per year. While the budget for Mythic Quest has never been officially published, the show’s CGI sequences couldn’t have been cheap to create, meaning the show, while popular, was likely too expensive for the penny-pinchers at Apple TV+ to give the go ahead for a new season.
While Mythic Quest wasn’t popular enough for a fifth season to be made, it was popular enough to spinoff a show called Side Quest, which is a four episode miniseries exploring the lives of Mythic Quest employees and players.
