The Denver, Colorado Police Department has joined several other police departments around the U.S. in handing out free AirTags to Denver drivers as part of a program to reduce vehicle thefts.
AirTags and other tracking tags have proven to be valuable tools in the war on vehicle theft. There have been several instances of AirTags help owners find stolen vehicles and other valuable items, causing police departments around the country to sit up and take notice.
The Denver Police Department’s DenverTrack program is handing out Apple AirTags and Samsung SmartTags to drivers to hide in their sedans, crossovers, trucks, and other vehicles, initially handing out a total of 450 free tracking tags between March 19 and March 21. The Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority supplied the AirTags and SmartTags.
Vehicle owners provide information about their vehicle, as well as information about built-in GPS tracking or third-party tracking devices already installed in the vehicle. A DenverTrack decal will also be sent to the vehicle owner, which can then be placed in the vehicle’s window.
Drivers who don’t have a tracking system built into their vehicle, or that do not already have an AirTag or a SmartTag hidden in the vehicle, can sign up for an in-person registration event.
Once a vehicle is registered, owners can call 911 to report to report it as stolen and confirm that the vehicle is in the DenverTrack program. The police will then be able to access the vehicle’s built-in tracking system or track the tracking tile given to them by the police department.
It should be noted that police officers cannot view the location of an AirTag unless the owner shares that information.
