The first beta of iOS 18.4 was seeded to developers on Friday, and the new seed includes a small but notable change for CarPlay, which now displays a third row of icons, up from two rows previously.
However, the third row of icons only appears on larger car displays, and it isn’t quite clear what the display threshold is for displaying the third row. MacRumors reported that while the additional third row was present on a Toyota Tundra, which can be equipped with up to a 14-inch screen, only two rows were still displayed in a Honda Civic with a 9-inch screen.
While this is only a minor change, and is apparently limited to specific CarPlay displays, displaying additional icons when possible is a nice quality-of-life improvement the system, allowing drivers to quickly access more apps, while reducing the needed swiping between pages.
If all goes well in beta testing, iOS 18.4 is expected to be released to the public in early April.
