Apple has confirmed that it is planning to open a retail store in downtown Detroit, as soon as this summer. The Cupertino company confirmed the stores upcoming opening with a hiring notice on the store’s new website.
No specific job listings have yet been posted, nor has Apple announced the exact address for the store. The only information on the location’s website, is a customized Apple logo and a notation that the store is “coming soon.”
Although Apple hasn’t officially announced the location of the store, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press, it is believed that it will take residence in two currently empty storefronts located between 1426 and 1434 Woodward Avenue, .
A downtown Detroit Apple Store is seen as a win for the area, which has seen several large national retailers open and close over the past ten years or so.
We first heard rumors of a downtown Detroit Apple Store location as early as 2015, as businessman Dan Gilbert in 2015 told reporters that “it’s more likely than not” Detroit would get an Apple Store within five years.
There is currently retail construction work underway, behind three covered-up storefronts between 1426 and 1434 Woodward. Apple has already established an Apple Developer Academy program in Detroit in partnership with the local Gilbert Family Foundation in 2021. Gilbert is the owner of the building where construction work is underway.
The new store would be positioned between the Shinola boutique hotel and the headquarters of General Motors.
The storefronts previously housed perfume retailer Le Labo, clothing/lifestyle brand Detroit is the New Black, and clothing store Madewell. All three of those stores closed down back in 2022.
There are currently six Apple Stores in Michigan, with locations in Somerset Collection in Troy; Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi; The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township and Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.
