Apple is working on a 27-inch mini-LED display that could come as soon as late 2025, according to display analyst Ross Young. The current Studio Display uses a 5K LED panel, making a mini-LED version of the display quite the update.
Young says that the display will be equipped mini-LEDs from Epistar, while LG Display will supply the panels.
Young had made a similar claim back in 2023, saying Apple had been working on a Studio Display Pro with ProMotion technology, but Apple reportedly canceled the project. Although Young at the time said that Apple was not working on a different 27-inch display, even though Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple’s much-rumored mini-LED 27-inch external display was still on track and that the company would begin mass production of the display in 2024 or early 2025.
The 27-inch monitor will have a glass backplane, Kuo explained, allowing for a thinner panel, narrower bezels, and a longer product lifespan.
Apple uses mini-LED technology for its MacBook Pro laptop, using over 10,000 mini-LEDs for deeper blacks, more detail in shadows, and improved highlights.
