American Airlines has joined the growing list of airlines that support an iPhone feature that allows passengers to share the location of their AirTag-equipped baggage at airports with the airline, according to a report from View from the Wing.
The share item location feature became available with the release of iOS 18.2, which was released in December.
Customers can privately and securely share the item’s location. Access to each link is limited to a small number of people, and recipients are required to authenticate in order to view the link through either their Apple Account or partner email address. The item’s location stops being shared as soon as a user is reunited with their item, or at any time that the item’s owner decides. An item’s shared location automatically expires after seven days. The whole process is end-to-end encrypted.
American Airlines rolled out support for the feature this week, a spokesperson for the airline confirmed.
The AA spokesperson told View from the Wing:
We’ve introduced the ability for customers to easily and securely share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessory directly with the airline.
Customers can generate a link through Apple’s Share Item feature available on iOS 18.2 or later and share it with American in the rare case when a bag is delayed for any trips with a segment from or to a U.S. airport. Customers just need to scan the QR code at the baggage office to start their claim and provide their information.
The new feature requires an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, respectively. Users can generate a Share Item Location link in the Find My app on their device and share it with the airline. Recipients of the link will be able to view the location of the item on an interactive map. The website automatically updates when an item has moved, along with a timestamp of the most recent update.

Other airlines offering the feature to their passengers include:
- United Airlines
- Delta
- British Airways
- Lufthansa
- Air Canada
- Air New Zealand
- Turkish Airlines
- Aer Lingus
- Austrian Airlines
- Brussels Airlines
- Swiss International Airlines
- Eurowings
- Iberia Airlines
Additional airlines are expected to implement the feature over the coming months.
