Apple is once again facing criticism over its Apple Intelligence-powered notification system after it has once again generated false news summaries.
BBC News reports that the Apple Intelligence-powered news summaries falsely notified users that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship before the final match had taken place. A separate summary on the same day falsely claimed that Rafael Nadal had come out as gay, misinterpreting a story about a Brazilian tennis player.
That false alert misinterpreted a story about Brazilian gay tennis player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva and the impact of his coming out on the sport.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) last month called for Apple to remove the AI summary feature after it generated misleading headlines about a high-profile murder case. The journalism organization has argued that summaries of the type prove that “generative AI services are still too immature to produce reliable information for the public.”
The BBC has demanded urgent action from Apple, claiming that the recurring issue threatens the credibility of trusted news organizations. “It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently – as this has happened multiple times,” a BBC spokesperson said.
News summaries are available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 models, and M-Series-powered iPads and Macs running iOS 18.1 or later. The feature is designed to simplify notification management by condensing multiple alerts into brief summaries.
