Apple Sees iPhone Sales in China Fall for Fourth Consecutive Month

Apple saw iPhone sales in China fall for the fourth straight month, as all non-Chinese phone brands saw a sharp decline in sales in the country. Official data shows that shipments of foreign-branded smartphones fell 47% year-on-year.

Apple has seen its iPhone sales numbers sag in recent years, as the company has been faced several hurdles, including the Chinese government’s pressuring consumers in the country to buy Chinese brands, as well as the comeback of Huawei as a premium smartphone vendor.

While Apple traditionally doesn’t offer big discounts on its iPhone in China, the company is now offering rare discounts on its flagship iPhone models and several other products in China between January 4 and January 7.

Apple will offer discounts of up to 500 yuan (approximately $68 USD) on iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max models sold through its website, as well as Apple Stores in mainland China. The iPhone 16 and ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus will be discounted by 400 yuan, while iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models will be discounted up to 300 yuan.

New government data published by Reuters show sales of all non-Chinese smartphone brands continue to fall:

Shipments to China of foreign-branded smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone, fell by 47.4% in November from a year earlier, according to data released on Friday from a government-affiliated research firm, down for the fourth month

The decline follows October’s 44.25% year-on-year drop in foreign smartphone shipments, extending a downward trend in the world’s largest smartphone market.
