Leaker Claims Standard iPhone 17 Display to Boast Higher Refresh Rate

Apple’s base iPhone 17 model will boast a display with a higher refresh rate, possibly bringing Apple’s “ProMotion” technology to the base model iPhone for the first time.

The claim was posted by Weibo-based Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station over the weekend, who claimed information about Apple’s supply chain materials back up previous rumors about a higher refresh rate display coming to the standard iPhone 17.

While Digital Chat Station The leaker did not mention a specific hertz (Hz) rating, previous rumors have indicated the base model iPhone 17 will boast the 120Hz, or the “ProMotion” rate that has in the past been limited to the Pro versions of its iPhone lineup.

Apple is expected to use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels for all iPhone 17 models, which is what enables ProMotion due to its superior power efficiency.

ProMotion refresh rates that range from 1Hz to 120Hz. ProMotion provides always-on functionality, allowing always-on time, widgets, and notifications. The display adapts to the type of content being consumed, using lower refresh rates for static content, and higher refresh rates being used for activities like gaming or viewing video.

Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants has previously claimed that both the standard iPhone 17 and a slimmer model that has been referred to by many as the “iPhone 17 Air” will both feature ProMotion.

Digital Chat Station has in the past accurately revealed that the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus would feature a slightly smaller 48-megapixel sensor than the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro Max.
