Apple Working on New ‘LLM Siri’ for iOS 19 & macOS 16

Apple is working on a new and improved version of Siri that Apple employees referred to internally as “LLM ‌Siri‌,” reports Bloomberg Mark Gurman. Apple plans to unveil the improved Siri alongside iOS 19 and macOS 16 in 2025. LLM Siri is intended to compete better with chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Apple plans to use “advanced large language models” to improve the virtual assistant.

From Gurman’s report:

The new Siri, details of which haven’t been reported, uses more advanced large language models, or LLMs, to allow for back-and-forth conversations, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the effort hasn’t been announced. The system also can handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion, they said.
Revamping the 13-year-old Siri service is part of Apple’s efforts to become a force in artificial intelligence. The company debuted its much-ballyhooed Apple Intelligence platform last month, but it still lacks many of the features offered by other tech giants.

LLM ‌Siri‌ would be able to carry ongoing conversations with users, much like ChatGPT can. Apple is working to have Siri‌ respond more like a human would. Large language model usage will also allow ‌Siri‌ to perform more complex tasks. Apple currently is forced to rely on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to accomplish this.

While the “LLM ‌Siri‌” software is being tested on iPhones, iPads and Macs as a separate app, the new version will ultimately replace the familiar Siri interface that users are familiar with. The company plans to announce the overhauled version of Siri alongside of next year’s iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates, Gurman’s sources told him.

While the new “LLM ‌Siri‌” will be announced in 2025 alongside Apple’s new operating systems, most of the new features won’t rollout until sometime in 2026. However, any debut of the new Siri is still at least several months away, so features and release timing could, and likely will, change.
