Sonos Faces More Problems, As a ‘Major Outage’ Hits Apple Music Integration

Sonos just can’t get a break recently, as the speaker maker has confirmed an ongoing “major outage” that has made Apple Music unavailable through the Sonos app.

Some Sonos users on Reddit report being unable to access their Apple Music library. Others report being randomly kicked out of their Apple Music account and so far are having no luck when attempting to sign back in. The outage has been ongoing since Tuesday afternoon.

While Sonos has confirmed the “major outage” on its system status page, the company hasn’t yet announced a timeline for providing a fix.

We’ve identified a problem with Apple Music on Sonos and are working with them on a fix. You may not see all results while browsing Apple Music on the Sonos app until this is resolved.

All other Sonos features on the page show as “operational.”

Sonos Apple Music integration allows users to access and play Apple Music content. The integrations also makes available viewing custom playlists, favorites, and more.

While it’s possible that the problem could be on Apple Music’s end, other Apple Music users aren’t reporting any issues.

Tuesday’s “major outage” is just the latest problems that Sonos and its users have faced in the last dew years.

In May, Sonos released a new version of its mobile app, which was bug-ridden and missing features available in the app’s previous version, making it quite unpopular among Sonos users. Sonos had prematurely launched the app, despite pressure from some employees not to release it.

Sonos had made a mid-2022 attempt to revamp its app, and was forced to deal with its aging infrastructure, which was written in nearly obsolete coding languages. The app had been patched several times in the past, creating a mess of spaghetti code.

Sonos executives decided against fixing the old code, instead declaring that developers should focus on new features instead. The new headphones Sonos released alongside the new app required overhauling the Sonos app and the cloud infrastructure behind it.

All of this occurred in the middle of internal restructuring at Sonos, as the company laid off staff and restructured groups inside the company. While some employees were “yelling and screaming” to Sonos executive that they should hold off on the new app’s release, one employee claims the push back wasn’t as strong as it could have been, due to employee fears of being laid off.
