Apple is currently working on smart glasses, as well as AirPods with built-in cameras, aiming for a potential release in 2027, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. Gurman’s comments came in his latest “Power On” newsletter.
Gurman says the new devices are part of Apple’s efforts to expand its augmented reality lineup beyond its current Vision Pro headset with devices with wider appeal.
Gurman says Apple is considering smart glasses similar to the result of Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration. The new smart glases and camera-equipped AirPods will make use of the billions of dollars Apple has invested in the Vision Pro’s technology, which allows devices to analyze their surroundings to provide relevant information to users.
The devices will also likely use the technology behind a similar feature coming to the iPhone 16 lineup. Users will soon be able to use the Camera app to point their device at an object and use a click-and-hold gesture to get information about the object.
Gurman notes that Apple’s smart glasses and AirPods with cameras are still in the planning stages, but they are a piece of Apple augmented reality strategy, designed to bring AR features to more accessible form factors.
Gurman also mentioned that a lower-cost version of the Vision Pro headset, priced around $2,000, could debut as soon as 2025, while a second-generation Vision Pro with an upgraded processor is scheduled for a 2026 release.
