Earlier today, we reported that some iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users are reporting that their devices are randomly freezing and rebooting.
The issue appears to happen randomly, even to devices in standby mode. The iPhone will with be slow to respond to touch input, eventually doing a quick restart. Some users also report their iPhone restarting unexpectedly when in standby mode.
While most users reported that the issue appears sporadically, others said they are seeing the issue happen 10 to 20 crashes per day.
Apple has now confirmed that the iOS 18.1 update will fix the restart issue. The fix is is mentioned in the iOS 18.1 release notes included with the release candidate that was released earlier today.
Fixes an issue where iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro models may unexpectedly restart
iOS 18.1 also fixes several other bugs, including:
- Fixes an issue in Podcasts where unplayed episodes are marked as played
- Fixes an issue where videos recorded at 4K 60 while the device is warm could experience stutter while scrubbing the video playback in Photos
- Fixes an issue where digital car keys may not unlock or start a vehicle with passive entry after restoring from a backup or transferring directly from another iPhone
The iOS 18.1 update should be available to the public sometime before the end of October.
