Apple on Monday announced its new M4 iMac lineup, and alongside that unveiling, Apple also announced updates to its Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad. The Mac accessories are now equipped with USB-C charging ports, replacing the Lightning port used on previous models. While the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard are included in the box with the iMac, the Magic Trackpad is an optional upgrade.
From Apple’s iMac press release:
“Every iMac comes with a color-matched Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or optional Magic Trackpad, all of which now feature a USB-C port, so users can charge their favorite devices with a single cable.”
Beyond the switch to USB-C connectivity, there does not appear to be any other changes to the Magic accessories. Sadly, that includes the Magic Mouse’s charging port, which remains located on the bottom of the mouse. UGH!
As noted by MacRumors, the “Magic” accessories with USB-C ports are also sold separately:
- Magic Mouse in White or Black
- Magic Keyboard
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad in White or Black
- Magic Trackpad in White or Black
The older Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad with a Lightning charging port is still available, but it lacks a Touch ID button. All other Lightning-based Magic accessories appear to have been discontinued.
The updated accessories are now available.
This means that the list of Apple devices and accessories that are still sold with either a Lightning port or a Lightning connector continues to shrink. The remaining Lightning-capable devices and accessories are as follows:
- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE
- First-generation Apple Pencil
- Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (No Touch ID)
We are expecting to see a new iPhone SE with a USB-C port launch in 2025, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will likely be discontinued next September.
