Apple today seeded the third betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 to allow developers to continue testing Apple Intelligence features. The third betas come two weeks after Apple seeded the second betas.
Developers have the choice of opting into the new betas with Apple Intelligence or sticking with the standard beta track. Apple Intelligence features will require an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPad or Mac powered by an Apple Silicon chip. Only eligible devices will display the update option.
After updating your device, Apple Intelligence can be enabled in the Settings app. You’ll need to opt into an Apple Intelligence waitlist, but you should receive access within a few hours or so.
While some Apple Intelligence features won’t be available until later this year or early next year, several features are available, including Writing Tools, Siri’s revamped design, the option to move between voice commands and typing to Siri, summaries for transcripts and other content, the new Mail categories and smart replies, smart replies in Messages, and more.
As mentioned by iDropNews, the third iOS 18.1 beta brings at least one new photo-related tool, providing the ability to clean up objects from photos. The new Clean Up tool will remove unwanted objects in a photo via AI image recognition. Users select an object to erase by drawing a circle around it, brushing over it, or even tapping on it. The feature works on all digital photos, whether or not they were taken on the iPhone.
Apple says the Clean Up feature uses multiple machine learning models to detect distracting objects, determine where the edges are, and replace them. Shadows and reflections can also be removed as part of the process.
Features that are not yet available in iOS 18.1 include Image Playground, Genmoji, ChatGPT integration, Priority Notifications, and other Siri capabilities like the ability to do more in apps and on-screen awareness.
The Apple Intelligence features are currently limited to the developer beta and nothing has been announced whether or not there will be a public beta for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.
