The betas of Apple’s upcoming macOS Sequoia operating system have required users to reauthorize permissions for screen recording apps on a regular basis, a “feature” that has not proven popular with beta testers.
Screen recording app permission popups have been appearing on a weekly basis throughout the beta testing process. However, Apple has now lengthened the timespan between popups, thanks to user feedback.
Apple’s latest beta seed of macOS Sequoia now prompts users to renew app permissions once per month, which can be considered an improvement over the previous one-week period. The prompt reminds users that screen recording apps have access to their screens and audio.
[App Name] is requesting to bypass the system private window picker and directly access your screen and audio. This will allow [App Name] to record your screen and system audio, including personal or sensitive information that may be visible or audible.
When the popup, um, pops up, users will now see an option to “Allow For One Month” to let the app function as normal or to open System Settings to get to the screen recording options. Apple has also removed the requirement for macOS Sequoia users to approve screen recording apps after restarting their Macs.
