The 2025 iPhone 17 lineup will be equipped with 12GB of RAM, an impressive jump from the expected 8GB of RAM in this year’s iPhone 16 models, claims a leaker with a good track record when it comes to accurate predictions related to Apple’s plans.
In a Weibo post on Wednesday, Chinese-language user “Phone Chip Expert” said next year’s iPhone 17 models will have 12GB of RAM for more advanced on-device AI applications.
Weibo post, via Google Translate:
If you want to change to an AI iPhone, maybe the iPhone 17 in 2025 is the best choice. This year’s i16 has only 8GB of memory, which is mainly used for cloud AI. Next year’s i17 will have 12GB of memory and more edge AI applications. For reference for those who want to change iPhones with limited budgets, of course, the rich don’t need to consider it.
In the current iPhone 15 lineup, onboard RAM differs between regular and Pro models. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max come with 8GB of RAM. The difference in memory is the reason that Apple Intelligence (Apple’s Artificial Intelligence features) is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max handsets.
All four Apple iPhone 16 models are expected to boast 8GB of RAM, as is the much-rumored fourth-generation iPhone SE, which is widely expected to launch in spring 2025.
“Edge AI,” which is referred to in the Weibo post, refers to AI processing that is performed directly on the local device, rather than relying on cloud servers to do the job.
“Phone Chip Expert” has a track record of accurate predictions. Phone Chip Expert was the first to reveal that standard iPhone 14 models would continue to use the A15 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models would use the more advanced A16 chip.
