California Driver’s License and Digital ID Could Soon be Added to iPhone/Apple Watch Wallet App

Californians should soon be able to add their driver’s license and digital IDs to the Wallet app on their iPhone and Apple Watch. The news leaked after landing pages were discovered on the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website that explained the new feature to California citizens.

The landing page in question, which lacks a proper website security certificate and also contains placeholder images and several broken links, reads as follows:

“Now you can add your California driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch so you can present it easily and securely in person and in app.”

The landing pages were discovered on Sunday by Jimmy Obomsawin after he explored the website after someone on Wednesday added a link to the pages in the Apple Wallet Wikipedia entry.

California would be the sixth state to add support for digital IDs in the Wallet app if it moves forward with its plans. Ohio last month became the fifth state to add Wallet support, joining the ranks of other states offering Digital ID support in Wallet, including Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia.

Apple announced plans to add support for digital IDs back in September 2021, but since the feature requires states to implement support, the rollout has been quite slow. In 2021, Apple said that it was in “discussions with many more states” and was optimistic that Wallet IDs would be available nationwide in the future. Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah are also reportedly working to add support for driver’s licenses or digital IDs to the Wallet app.
