Apple is on track to release two new variants of its fourth-generation AirPods this fall. The Cupertino firm will debut both an entry-level and a mid-tier model, replacing its AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 earbuds, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter
Apple has offered the AirPods 2 since 2019. The entry-level AirPods still boast the traditional AirPods design and have been offered for as low as $90, making them an attractive and affordable option for Apple customers. While the AirPods 2 lack any fancy new features, they are a solid wireless headphone option for users with Apple devices
The iPhone maker’s AirPods 3 earbuds have been around since October 2021 and do offer a somewhat limited upgraded feature set, including Spatial Audio, new force sensor on the stems, Apple Watch charging on the case, and overall sound enhancements. AirPods 3 go for $179.
Gurman says the upcoming AirPods 4 are intended to act as a replacement for both models, as the new earbuds will be available as both an entry-level AirPods 2 replacement and a mid-tier model that will take the place of the AirPod 3. While the new earbuds will have a similar design, only the mid-tier AirPods 4 will boast active noise cancellation.
We can expect to see both versions of the AirPods 4 to make the move to USB-C. The entry-level AirPods 4 will likely lack wireless charging, while the mid-level buds will offer the feature, continuing to follow the same strategy the company followed with its AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 lineup.
