Apple is reportedly mulling over making an investment into OpenAI, makers of the popular ChatGPT service. An investment into OpenAI could help improve Apple’s standing in the artificial intelligence marketplace.

Apple’s AI initiative, Apple Intelligence, will arrive later this year in Apple’s iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia operating system updates. Apple Intelligence allows users to connect Siri to handle queries. An investment by Apple into OpenAI would only deepen the relationship between the two firms.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is considering an investment into OpenAI as part of a new funding round. While it is unknown as to how much Apple may invest, although it could be in the billions.

A previous report revealed that venture capitalist company Thrive Capital is leading the round itself, which is anticipated to total several billion dollars in value.

Other major tech firms will also likely be investing in OpenAI. Microsoft has already invested $13 billion into OpenAI since 2019, owning a 49% share of its profits. The Redmond firm is also expected to be investing more as part of the round.
