Ohio Becomes 5th US State to Allow Digital IDs and Driver’s Licenses in Apple Wallet

iPhone and Apple Watch users in the great state of Ohio (my Mother-in-Law made me write that) can now add their driver’s licenses and digital IDs to the Wallet App on the iPhone.

The Ohio Mobile ID provides an easy, private, and secure way for Ohioans to present their state-issued ID in person at businesses and organizations with compliant mobile ID readers and in select apps that require identity or age verification. The Ohio Mobile ID can also be used at select TSA airport security checkpoints. Visit TSA.gov for the most up to date support for the Ohio Mobile ID.

Acceptance of the Ohio Mobile ID in Apple Wallet is a secure and convenient way for businesses to validate customer age and identity. The Ohio Mobile ID provides a reliable alternative to physical cards, streamlining verification processes and improving customer privacy and experience.

Ohio is the fifth state to add support for digital IDs in the Wallet app, joining the ranks that already included Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia.

Apple announced plans to add support for digital IDs back in September 2021, but since the feature requires states to implement support, the rollout has been quite slow. In 2021, Apple said that it was in “discussions with many more states” and was optimistic that Wallet IDs would be available nationwide in the future. Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah are also reportedly working to add support for driver’s licenses or digital IDs to the Wallet app.

Ohio has posted a tutorial on YouTube, walking users through adding their driver’s licenses or digital IDs to Apple Wallet.

IDs and licenses stored in the Wallet app can be used in the following U.S. airports at TSA checkpoints.

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Wallet app IDs can also be used to show proof of age or identity at some businesses and venues, but such venues have been slow to adopt this functionality, so availability is limited.

ID in Apple Wallet is available in select states and requires iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later, or Apple Watch Series 4 or later with WatchOS 9.5 or later. Mobile ID Acceptance on iPhone is available at select merchants and requires iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later.
