Apple’s Upcoming iPhone 16 Could Charge Up To Twice As Fast As Current iPhones

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 device lineup could boast a significant improvement in charging speeds, potentially halving charging times by increasing the fast-charging capability to 40W when using a compatible power adapter, says a recent rumor.

Li Nan, founder of the Weibo-based Angry Miao community, says Apple is planning to increase the charging potential for the iPhone 16 lineup, (Via ITHome.) While ITHome has a bit of a mixed record when it comes to device feature predictions, it did score last year with a prediction of the widespread adoption of the 48MP camera in the iPhone 15 lineup.

Currently, the iPhone 15 series can charge up to 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes when using a 20W or more charger. Anything over 20W doesn’t offer much of an improvement over the 20W charging times.

If 40W charging does make the iPhone 16 scene, users of the upcoming iPhone lineup could potentially see their device charge to 50% capacity in as little as 15 minutes or half the current charging time. Keep in mind that a battery charges fastest when it is depleted. Charging generally slows as the battery nears a full charge.

The faster charging capabilities would not carry over to wireless charging, which will remain limited to 15W for iPhones using MagSafe/Qi2 chargers and 7.5W for iPhones using non-MagSafe/Qi2 chargers.

As usual for reports about rumors like this, take it with a grain of your favorite low-sodium seasoning, as we won’t know anything for sure until this September when Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 16 lineup.
