The Apple Intelligence features that will debut during the iOS 18 beta testing period will require users to join a waitlist at first, according to code in iOS 18 discovered by MacRumors.
In the iOS 18 code, Apple Intelligence is referred to by the codename “Graymatter.” In the code, there are specific strings that say, “Join the Graymatter Waiting List” and “Joined Waitlist.” Other wording refers to it as a “limited preview.”
“While Graymatter is in limited preview, you may experience unusually slow responses when not in a supported region.”
Apple plans to slowly roll out Apple Intelligence during the iOS 18 beta testing period, which will run through this summer, meaning the limited preview and waitlist may be something that Apple will use to control the rollout during the operating system’s beta testing period.
Apple may also have a waitlist in place when Apple Intelligence launches to the public with this fall’s iOS 18 wide release, to deal with the issues that have faced other AI services, including those faced by ChatGPT in times of great demand. However, since users will need an iPhone 15 Pro or later, there will only be two generations of the iPhone that can fully access Apple Intelligence, that may help a bit with any possible overloads.
