Apple Delays Plans for North Carolina Campus

Apple is pausing its plans for a new North Carolina campus, reports the Triangle Business Journal. Apple in 2021 announced that it would invest more than $1 billion in a project that included a new engineering and research center in the Research Triangle area of Raleigh and Durham.

Apple has made only a limited bit of progress on the campus since 2021 and has not provided any updates on the progress of the campus. Apple told the publication that work on the campus is currently paused, and it is in talks with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Commerce to extend the project’s timeline by four years.

Apple’s initial plans for Research Triangle Park included six buildings and a parking garage totaling 700,000 square feet of office space, 190,000 square feet of accessory space, and close to 3,000 parking spaces on 41 acres.

Apple is the owner of 281 acres of land in the area where its campus will be built, so there could be several phases of construction.

While giving no reason for the delay, Apple said that it is still committed to building the new campus.

Apple has been operating in North Carolina for over two decades. And we’re deeply committed to growing our teams here. In the last three years, we’ve added more than 600 people to our team in Raleigh, and we’re looking forward to developing our new campus in the coming years.

While Apple last year filed development plans for the first phase of the campus construction, it has never published a specific timeline for the project.
