App Store Installs No Longer Require Twice the Disk Space in macOS Sequoia

App installations from the Mac App Store will no longer require twice the amount of local storage space. With the release of macOS Sequoia, the free space requirement will be the final size of the app, plus a small bit of buffer space, according to a report by MacRumors.

The new disk space requirement will be a boon to users who download and install large games. Apple’s current version of macOS (Sonoma) requires double the space requirement to successfully install an app, which can be a challenge when installing a game, many of which can take up as much as hundreds of gigabytes of hard drive space.

Per the macOS Sequoia beta 2 release notes, only enough space to accommodate the game’s final size, plus a small bit of buffer space.

New Features

Starting in macOS 15, the App Store no longer needs twice the space free for an initial app download and install. The free space requirement will now be the final install size of the app, plus a small buffer. Developers should consider this change in any messaging they might have around size requirements.
