Supply chain analyst Jeff Pu has shared supply chain rumors about the 2025 iPhone 17, when we might see foldable devices from Apple, and Apple’s AI servers, which will be powered by M2 Ultra and M4 chips.
In a research note with investment firm Haitong, Pu said the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will both be equipped with 12GB of RAM. The current iPhone 15 Pro models both boast 8GB of RAM and the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to also be equipped with 8GB of RAM. A large increase in RAM would improve multitasking performance on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Pu also said the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a “much narrowed Dynamic Island,” due to the handset’s smaller “metalens” for Face ID.
Pu says Apple has begun building its own AI servers, powered by its M2 Ultra chip, and it will soon begin building M4 servers.
Pu says supply chain checks indicate that Foxconn is currently building M2 Ultra-powered AI servers for Apple, with plans for more AI servers in late 2025, using Apple’s upcoming M4 chip.
Pu also expects to see Apple announce on-device AI features at WWDC in June, including photo and video editing, audio recording summarization, and on-the-fly language translation.
Pu also claims Apple’s first foldable devices will go into mass production in 2025 and 2026. The Cupertino company is expected to release a foldable iPad or MacBook as its first foldable device, ahead of a foldable iPhone.
Apple is rumored to be readying a foldable with a 20.3-inch display for production in late 2025. Pu says information from Korean display makers, as well as hinge manufacturers, supports that timeframe.
Once Apple does debut a foldable iPhone, Pu believes it will feature a 7.9-inch or 8.3-inch display. The foldable iPhone is expected to begin mass production in late 2026.
