LG is preparing to begin mass production of 20.2-inch or 18.8-inch foldable screens for a MacBook with a target to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In a post on Medium earlier today, Kuo said Apple is working on foldable screens that will be “as crease-free as possible,” requiring the use of high-cost components. Kuo said that could result in a foldable screen MacBook being nearly as expensive as Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro headset. The 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup currently starts at $2,499.
Kuo estimates that Apple will ship more than one million foldable MacBook shipments in 2026, indicating that we can expect the device will launch around two years from now.
He expects the new foldable screen MacBooks to be powered by Apple’s next-generation M5 chip, which has not yet been announced.
Less than two hours after Kuo’s comments on Medium, display industry analyst Ross Young posted on X, saying the foldable MacBook will indeed feature an approximately 18.8-inch screen.
Young said he expects “cost reasons” to result in the new MacBook being equipped with an 18.76-inch display rather than a 20.25-inch display. Kuo also said an 18.8-inch MacBook would be similar in size to a traditional 13-inch or 14-inch MacBook when it is folded.
The MacBook with a foldable screen is rumored to boast an all-screen design with a virtual keyboard. However, we haven’t seen any rumors yet as to the device’s exact design details.
So, it seems that any new foldable MacBook is still a few years away from hitting shelves, meaning we’ll see several other rumors being floated about the new laptop, so stay tuned.
