A customer email shared by Android Authority reveals the Google One VPN service will be shut down later this year. The service rolled out to Android devices in October 2020, before being made available to iOS devices and Macs in 2022.
The VPN service initially launched as part of Google One’s Premium 2TB storage plan, priced at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. In 2023, Google expanded VPN availability to all Google One Plans, including the lowest-priced $1.99 per month option.
Google told 9to5Google that it is shutting down the service because “people simply weren’t using it.” (Likely due to Google being known to track users’ travels around the web, so why should anyone believe the VPN service was truly private?) Existing users will be directed to third-party VPN alternatives.
Google Fi cellular customers will continue to have access to the VPN service, as will Google Pixel owners that have a Pixel 7 or newer smartphone.
