Apple on Monday seeded the release candidate of its upcoming tvOS 17.4 update to developers for testing. The release candidate comes one week following the release of the fifth beta.
The tvOS 17.4 release candidate is compatible with the Apple TV 4K (1st and 2nd generation) and the Apple TV HD. The new release candidate can be downloaded to a compatible Apple TV that has the proper profile installed, which can be done by downloading it onto the Apple TV using Xcode.
The tvOS 17.4 update adds support for Apple Music SharePlay on the Apple TV. The Apple TV user can pull up an Apple Music QR code that can be scanned by anyone, which then allows multiple people to contribute to what’s playing via Apple Music. An Apple Music subscription is not required.
There have been reports of references to homeOS in tvOS 17.4, although, at this point, it’s not exactly clear what homeOS is.
tvOS 17.4 is expected to be released to the public in the next week or so.
As usual, MacTrast and Apple both warn users to not install any betas or release candidates on their daily driver Apple TV. Instead, only install betas or release candidates on a device set aside for testing purposes.
