Apple has initially ordered 8.5 million OLED display panels from South Korean display suppliers to be used in the Cupertino company’s redesigned iPad Pro models, which are expected to arrive as soon as this month.
Apple is relying on multiple OLED display suppliers for its upcoming 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models. Samsung will produce the 11-inch panels, while LG Display will manufacture the 13-inch panels. Samsung is expected to produce 4 million units in 2024, while LG will make 4.5 million units for the year, indicating that Apple believes the larger model will be slightly more popular.
Some industry insiders say the split between the two suppliers is due to changes in Apple’s demand outlook for OLED iPad Pro models, as well as the unstable production capacity and yield of the two suppliers. Both suppliers are reportedly still wrestling with Apple’s requirement for new panel technologies. Which reportedly concentrates on “unrivaled” display quality, as well as a design that cuts down on the thickness and weight of its iPad Pro models.
Apple may adjust the number of OLED panels it will receive from Samsung and LG after production of the initial order, depending on production yield and possible adjustments to Apple’s demand forecast for the new OLED iPad Pro models. Apple reportedly projected that it would produce 10 million new iPad Pro devices in 2024, so the new shipment forecast is lower than had previously been expected.
In addition to new OLED displays the new iPad Pro models are also expected to boast faster 3-nanometer M3 chips. MagSafe charging is also rumored to make the scene. Apple is also expected to debut a new Magic Keyboard and an updated Apple Pencil alongside the new OLED iPad Pros.
