The privacy-first DuckDuckGo Browser has received an update and has added a new “Sync & Backup” feature that now allows users to securely sync their favorites, bookmarks, and passwords across multiple devices, without having to set up an account or sign in to use it.
“Sync & Backup” generates a QR code on mobile devices or an alphanumeric code on a computer to establish syncing.
DuckDuckGo doesn’t track users, and therefore cannot access users’ synced data, which includes passwords stored in the browser’s built-in password manager, which is encrypted locally. Private sync keeps all data securely encrypted throughout the syncing process. (The unique key needed to decrypt it is stored only on the devices.)
Users can also migrate bookmarks and passwords to a new device, and sync their Email Protection account between devices. (DuckDuckGo offers a free email forwarding service that removes hidden email trackers and lets users create unique private email addresses on the fly.
The new feature works across most Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone devices, and can be accessed in the browser’s Settings (“Sync & Backup” -> “Sync With Another Device“).
The privacy-protecting DuckDuckGo’s browser is available in the iOS App Store and the Mac App Store, as well as the DuckDuckGo website.
