Police arrested a California man on Wednesday night in connection to the theft of 50 iPhones from a Berkeley Apple retail store. The man was allegedly shown in a video grabbing dozens of iPhones on display in the store, then walking casually out of the store, brushing past a police car, and then getting into a waiting getaway car.
Emeryville Police Department detectives arrested 22-year-old Tyler Mims of Berkeley for his involvement in the theft. Mims has been charged with burglary, grand theft, and other crimes.
On Monday, a caller reported the crime, telling police that the suspect fled with 50 iPhones, with a total value of $49,230.
A masked man wearing all black clothing was seen in the video going from table to table at about 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 5, 2024, quickly ripping phones from their display and placing them into his pockets. (Those must’ve been some HUGE pockets!)
A 45-second video shows the thief taking dozens of iPhones, each worth hundreds of dollars, as witnesses in the store watched. The person recording the video followed the thief out of the store, recording as the thief brushed against a police cruiser before getting into a black Hyundai.
Since Jan. 19, the department has responded to four grand thefts from the Apple Store in town.
