Apple has offered an explanation of how iOS 17.4’s new default browser prompt will work when an EU resident opens up Safari for the first time after updating their device.
iPhone users in the EU will be presented with a random list of the current 12 most popular web browsers from their country’s local App Store.
Apple also shared an alphabetical list of the browsers that EU users will see in each country:
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czechia
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Ireland
Italy
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
While it has already been possible since iOS 14 to change an iPhone’s default web browser via the Settings app since iOS 14, Apple has now added the default browser prompt in Safari to comply with new regulations imposed under the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
In the EU, iOS 17.4 also allows web browsers to use web engines other than Apple’s WebKit.
Apple said iOS 17.4 will be released to the public in March.
