Apple is officially doing away with the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Show apps on the Apple TV starting as of the upcoming release of the tvOS 17.2 update. As first reported by 9to5Mac, the release candidate version of tvOS 17.2 redirects users to the Apple TV app when they attempt to open one of the above apps.
Now that the Apple TV app supports purchases and rentals of movie and TV episodes, the old iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps has become redundant and is also leading to confusion among some Apple TV users.
“iTunes Movies and Your Purchases Have Moved,” reads the text in the iOS 17.2 release candidate. “You can buy or rent movies and find your purchases in the Apple TV app.”
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in October said that Apple had plans to remove the standalone Apple TV iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Show apps and that the TV show and movie sections would be removed from the iTunes Store app on iPhones and iPads.
While Appl is removing iTunes TV Shows and iTunes Movies apps on Apple TV, the apps will continue to exist at least short-term to provide customers with information on where to find the content going forward.
While Apple is also expected to make a similar move on the iPhone and iPad, those sections are still present and accounted for in the iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 release candidates
Apple is expected to release tvOS 17.2 to the public next week.
