New NameDrop-Like Feature for Sharing Boarding Passes and More Available in iOS 17.2

Apple’s upcoming iOS 17.2 software update for the iPhone brings a new NameDrop-like feature that allows iPhone users to quickly share movie tickets, boarding passes, and other passes from the Wallet app with other iPhone users.

Users can already share several types of passes via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and more through the iOS sharing menu, this new feature provides a faster and more convenient method of sharing. It uses a method similar to NameDrop, which allows users to quickly share their contact info by simply bringing two iPhones close to each other.

The feature is described as follows in the iOS 17.2 release notes: “AirDrop improvements including expanded contact sharing options and the ability to share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other eligible passes by bringing two iPhones together.”

To use the feature, do the following. (Both iPhones must have iOS 17.2 installed.):

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Tap on the pass that you want to share.
  3. Hold your iPhone near the top of another iPhone.
  4. A “Share” button will appear below the pass on your iPhone. Tap that.
  5. The pass will be sent to the other iPhone via AirDrop.

The iOS 17.2 update is currently in the final stages of testing and will likely be released next week.
