Apple appears to be ramping up its work on implementing 6G cellular connectivity for its devices, says Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman’s comments came in the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter.
Gurman explained that Apple is increasingly turning its attention to 6G, even though it has run into roadblocks in its efforts to develop an in-house 5G modem. The Cupertino firm is increasingly hiring engineers to look at 6G.
The first Apple job listings with reference to 6G first appeared in 2021 Most recently, a job position for a Modem Systems Software Architect has appeared on the company’s website. The listing describes an individual who will “coordinate the design and modeling of a 6G reference architecture.” Gurman says the listing is part of the company’s growing push to hire engineers to develop 6G cellular technologies.
While Apple’s work on 6G cellular connectivity may seem a bit rushed, as the 6G standard isn’t expected to be implemented until 2030 at the earliest, and it’s still not even clear how much faster it will be than 5G. However, cellular carriers are already working on next-generation 6G networking.
While some analysts say the technology could bring with it speeds more than 100 times faster than 5G, the actual enhanced performance in the real world is yet to be seen.
