A new report claims we will not see the return of Touch ID fingerprint authentication to the iPhone lineup. “Mobile chip expert” who is anĀ integrated circuit expert on Weibo with a good track record for sharing information about Apple’s plans, says Apple has permanently shut down most of the equipment it uses to manufacture the chips used in Apple’s Touch ID process.
It should be noted that Apple still uses Touch ID on its low-priced iPhone, the iPhone SE. The leaker says Apple still has a few remaining units that it uses to make the chips for the iPhone SE’s Touch ID sensor. Despite rumors to the contrary, this suggests Apple has no plans to bring Touch ID back as a way to authenticate users on the iPhone platform.
Many expect to see Apple move to Face ID as the authentication method for the next-generation iPhone SE, which is rumored to resemble Apple’s iPhone 14 handset. However, rumors have persisted that Apple is working on an under-screen version of Touch ID for a future iPhone, as soon as 2026.
“Mobile chip expert” has a good track record when it comes to Apple device rumors, and was the first to report that the iPhone 14 would continue to use the A15 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 14 Pro models would use the A16.
