Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says he expects to see two new iMacs during the next two years. Kuo says we should see a new 24-inch iMac in 2024 and a higher-end iMac with a 32-inch mini-LED display in 2025.
While Kuo didn’t say what process Apple might use in the 24-inch iMac, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously claimed that Apple will use its M3 chip in a future iMac. The M3 chip, fabricated using TSMC’s 3-nanometer process, will boast an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU and will provide performance and efficiency improvements.
The current 24-inch iMac was released in 2021, and it is powered by an M1 chip. Apple has not updated the iMac since 2021, so it is overdue for a refresh.
Gurman has also maintained that Apple has no plans for an M2 version of the iMac. While Japanese site Mac Otakara said last week that Apple would release a 24-inch iMac with M2 and M2 Pro chips in the near future, that appears to be an inaccurate prediction.
Kuo also today said we can expect to see a higher-end iMac sporting a mini-LED 32-inch display sometime in 2025. While Kuo did not mention a possible moniker for the new iMac, it could be positioned as an “iMac Pro” to replace the 2017 model that Apple discontinued two years ago.
After the iMac Pro was discontinued, it was replaced with the Mac Studio and its matching 27-inch Studio Display. Apple would likely use the same mini-LED technology used in the more expensive Pro Display XDR for the new, larger iMac.
