Earlier this week, Apple released the iOS 17.1 Release Candidate. While the release doesn’t fix an issue iPhone 15 users reported about their devices turning off during the night, it does include a fix for an iPhone 15 Pro Max issue that was causing screen burn-in.
Apple’s release notes say that the iOS 17.1 update “Fixes an issue that may cause display image persistence.”
Users of the iPhone 15 Pro Max have reported issues with screen burn-in. The issue doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem, and it’s not known whether it also affects the iPhone 15 Pro.
Burn-in has been an issue with displays since the days of massive CRT displays and it has continued to affect today’s OLED displays. Burn-in usually happens when an image is shown on screen for an extended amount of time.
Apple release notes do not include the steps Apple took to fix the issue. Presumably, it’s related to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s always-on display.
