European Union officials are surveying rivals of Apple, Google, and Amazon whether or not Apple’s iMessage should be subject to the Digital Markets Act. EU officials are trying to determine their next course of action.
The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is a set of rules that specifically target the tech Goliath’s, including Apple, Amazon, Google, and others. The aim of the rules is to level the playing field for all companies. Officials are currently trying to determine what they should do with their newfound powers.
Reuters reports that questionnaires were sent out by the European Commission, asking for rivals and users to rate how important Apple’s iMessage and three services of Microsoft’s are compared to competitors. Participants were also queried bisoness users whether there were specific reasons they relied on the various services.
The European Commission’s probe into iMessage, as well as Microsoft’s Bing, Edge, and Microsoft Advertising began in September, to determine whether they need to be operated within the rules of the DMA.
The investigation is expected to continue for another five months or so.
