Google today announced that it is adding updated generative AI capabilities to its Google Search app for Chrome search functionality. The search giant says the feature is designed to help users “better learn and make sense of information.”
The Google Search app for Chrome now includes a beta option to summarize a long article, provide “key points” from a webpage, and provide an “Explore on page” section containing questions and answers pulled from the content.
Google says that the new “SGE while browsing” feature is meant to help people “more deeply engage” with long-form content from creators. The feature only works on articles freely available on the web, and won’t summarize articles that are behind a paywall.
Currently, the new AI functionality is only available on Chrome on iOS and Android devices, although Google plans to expand the capabilities to the desktop “in the days ahead.”
