Photos of what leakers claim are the upcoming iPhone 15’s USB-C connector ports have been leaked online, indicating that Apple is indeed making the switch from Lightning to USB-C connectors in its new iPhone lineup.
The images here were shared by leakers @lipilipsi and @John011235 on X, and are said to show the USB-C connector ports attached to the flexible PCB component parts that will be used in the standard iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
This is not the first time we’ve seen indications that Apple will be making the switch from Lightning to USB-C charging, as earlier this year, Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Apple’s iPhone 15 will dump the Lightning port in favor of USB-C connectors. However, Apple will place some limits on the port, as users won’t get faster charging times unless they’re using Apple-certified cables.
Kuo says, Apple will optimize the performance of fast charging with USB-C on iPhone 15 models. While iPhone 14 devices support up to 20W of maximum charging speed, Pro models support up to 27W. Users should be able to recharge their iPhones faster, but only if they have a certified charger.
Kuo also claims that users will only see faster charging speeds when also using Apple-certified USB-C cables. So even if you have a compatible plug adapter, it may not deliver its full charge without the right cable.
The switchover will allow Apple to comply with new regulations implemented in the European Union, requiring Apple to produce iPhones with USB-C ports in the EU, so Apple either had to make a worldwide design change or manufacture special iPhones for sale in the EU.
Apple is expected to hold its annual iPhone event on either Tuesday, September 12 or Wednesday, September 13, this year, says Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
